A systematic review of treating recurrent head and neck cancer: a reintroduction of brachytherapy with or without surgery.
Conclusions: Although surgery remains a mainstay treatment for RHNC, intraoperative interstitial brachytherapy delivery as adjunctive therapy may improve the treatment outcome and may be associated with fewer complication rates as compared to reirradiation using external beam radiotherapy. Further investigations are required to elucidate the role of brachytherapy for RHNC. PMID: 30479623 [PubMed]

Perpetual role of brachytherapy in organ-sparing treatment for bladder cancer: a historical review.
Authors: der Steen-Banasik EV, Oosterveld B, Smits G, Atema E, Gellekom MV, Haverkort M, Visser A Abstract Brachytherapy-based radiotherapy has been applied for decades in the curative treatment for solitary, ≤ 5 cm bladder tumors. This review provides a historical perspective of this organ sparing approach. A systematic search of the published literature between 1900 and 2019 was performed on the subject of bladder brachytherapy using PubMed, with digitally retrievable articles being supplemented with articles from the personal collection of the authors. The articles were divided into consecutive time periods, e...

The role of brachytherapy in the management of brain metastases: a systematic review.
Conclusions: For a variety of reasons including absence of physician expertise in brachytherapy, lack of published data on treatment outcomes, and rates of radiation necrosis, brachytherapy is not presently a part of standard paradigm for brain metastases. However, our review indicates brachytherapy as a modality that offers excellent local control and quality of life, and suggested that its use should be further studied. PMID: 32190073 [PubMed]

The 100 most cited articles in prostate cancer brachytherapy: systematic review and bibliometric analysis.
Conclusions: The bibliometric analysis presents a detailed list of the 100 most cited articles in prostate cancer brachytherapy. There are clear recommendations for treatment with prostate cancer brachytherapy. The goal of prostate cancer brachytherapy is to improve long-term outcomes and quality of life. PMID: 32695202 [PubMed]

Non-melanoma skin cancer treated with high-dose-rate brachytherapy: a review of literature.
CONCLUSIONS: Based on the review data, we can conclude that the treatment of NMSC with HDR-BT is effective with excellent and good cosmetics results, even in elderly patients. The hypofractionated course appears effective with very good local disease control. More data with large-scale randomized controlled trials are needed to assess the efficacy and safety of brachytherapy. PMID: 28115960 [PubMed - in process]

Vaginal toxicity after high-dose-rate endovaginal brachytherapy: 20 years of results.
Conclusions: The data suggest that HDR endovaginal brachytherapy, with or without chemotherapy, is very well tolerated with low rates of acute and late vaginal toxicities. Further prospective studies with higher numbers of patients and longer follow-up are necessary to evaluate acute and late toxicities after HDR endovaginal brachytherapy. PMID: 30662479 [PubMed]

Brachytherapy in non melanoma skin cancer of eyelid: a systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: To date, few evidences are available on the role of BT in eyelid NMSC, and they show satisfactory results in terms of local control and functional cosmetic outcome. Therefore, prospective controlled trials are justified. PMID: 26816508 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Personalized re-treatment strategy for uveal melanoma local recurrences after interventional radiotherapy (brachytherapy): single institution experience and systematic literature review.
Conclusions: In selected cases, especially in presence of marginal local recurrence, a personalized re-treatment strategy with a plaque may offer high probability of tumor control and organ preservation but worsening of visual acuity. PMID: 30911311 [PubMed]

Depth determination of skin cancers treated with superficial brachytherapy: ultrasound vs. histopathology.
CONCLUSIONS: According to the results, HFUS is less accurate at very shallow depths. Nodular cases present higher depth determination differences than superficial ones. In our clinical practice, we decided to prescribe at 3 mm depth when HFUS measurements give depth lesion values smaller than this value. PMID: 25834579 [PubMed]

Brachytherapy boost after chemoradiation in anal cancer: a systematic review.
Authors: Frakulli R, Buwenge M, Cammelli S, Macchia G, Farina E, Arcelli A, Ferioli M, Fuccio L, Tagliaferri L, Galuppi A, Frezza GP, Morganti AG Abstract Radio-chemotherapy (RCT) is the primary treatment of anal cancer (AC). However, the role and the optimal total dose of a radiation boost is still unclear. No randomized controlled trials nor systematic reviews have been performed to analyze the efficacy of brachytherapy (BRT) as boost in AC. Therefore, we performed this systematic review based on PRISMA methodology to establish the role of BRT boost in AC. A systematic search of the bibliographic databases: PubMe...

The role of vaginal brachytherapy in stage I endometrial serous cancer: a systematic review.
Conclusions: These data support the concept that in adequately selected patients, VBT alone may be a suitable radiotherapy technique in women with stage I USC who underwent surgical staging and received adjuvant chemotherapy. PMID: 32190072 [PubMed]

Clinical implementation of a new electronic brachytherapy system for skin brachytherapy.
Authors: Pons-Llanas O, Ballester-Sánchez R, Celada-Álvarez FJ, Candela-Juan C, García-Martínez T, Llavador-Ros M, Botella-Estrada R, Barker CA, Ballesta A, Tormo-Micó A, Rodríguez S, Perez-Calatayud J Abstract Although surgery is usually the first-line treatment for nonmelanoma skin cancers, radiotherapy (RT) may be indicated in selected cases. Radiation therapy as primary therapy can result in excellent control rates, cosmetics, and quality of life. Brachytherapy is a radiation treatment modality that offers the most conformal option to patients. A new modality for skin brachytherapy is electronic brachythe...

Attitude and practice of brachytherapy in India: a study based on the survey amongst attendees of Annual Meeting of Indian Brachytherapy Society.
CONCLUSIONS: The survey highlights a positive attitude towards increasing brachytherapy use, and may serve as an important guiding tool in designing teaching and training programmes; thus overcoming the hurdles in successful and widespread use of a quality brachytherapy programme at radiotherapy centers. High-dose-rate interstitial brachytherapy in early stage oral tongue cancer - 15 year experience from a tertiary care institute.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study recommends treating patients with brachytherapy alone in T1 stage, and demonstrates the need for addressing nodal region either by neck dissection or nodal irradiation in T2 stage patients. Also, the study highlights the need for dose escalation (from the doses used in the study) in both T1 and T2 stage tumors when using interstitial brachytherapy either as sole modality or as a boost. Perioperative high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy in unresectable locally advanced pancreatic tumors.
CONCLUSIONS: The authors claim that the modification of catheter implantation using specially designed cannula, facilitates the process of inserting the catheter into the tumor, shortens the time needed for the procedure, and reduces the risk of complications. Mean survival time was 5.7 months. In the group of performed brachytherapy, the mean survival time was 6.7 months, while in the group of no brachytherapy performed - 4.4 months. In the group of brachytherapy, only one patient increased the dose of painkillers in the last month of his life. Remaining patients took constant doses of medicines. Perioperative HDR-Ir192 b...
